Information for External Moderators
External moderators are appointed by Certa to each Access to HE Diploma. They are appointed for their FE and HE expertise in curriculum areas and are often referred to as “forensic researchers” as they ensure that the provider is following the correct procedures as specified by the QAA and ensure the continued integrity of the Access to HE Diploma.
QAA requires that external moderators are appointed to a particular Diploma for no more four years.
Allocation of external moderators to diplomas/providers is undertaken provisionally in August. Final allocation is undertaken once final student numbers are known in September/October. External moderators work can work for other Awarding Organisations, (AOs) or Access Validating Agencies (AVAs).
All external moderators are required to attend CPD events each academic year. The first one being in October/early November.
External moderators are paid a visit and report fee and travel expenses are reimbursed. External moderators are also invited to attend a standardisation event. Standardisation events are held in March to contribute and offer guidance within their curriculum areas of expertise.
